I fully intended to finish this painting in color, but once I finished the underpainting, I liked it so much, I decided to bring it to completion in gray tones. It reminds me of some of the great black & white films Marilyn Monroe starred in. Such as "The Misfits".
Over my years as a career artist, my artist statement changes on an almost minute by minute basis. Like most human beings my emotional state at any one given time affects my decisions and actions, and creating art is no different. Rather than be defined by a particular genre of painting, I paint what sparks my creativity at the moment. Whether it be my annual Santa Claus paintings, because of my love for the holiday season, or painting highly textured abstracts for an entire month, I paint what I am driven to paint.
